Convoluted foam or pyramid foam

Convoluted foam or pyramid foam - what's the difference?

Important to know: Neither pyramid foams nor convoluted foams are suitable for sound insulation to the outside. With these two materials you can mainly reduce reverberation and noise IN THE ROOM and absorb sound waves. Both forms have been absolute classics for decades and are used wherever disturbing reverberation needs to be reduced cost-effectively. The noise level is reduced above all inside the room - naturally also slightly outside, but for sound insulation you should use other materials, such as our composite foams.

Convoluted foam as a low-cost sound-absorbing material

Convoluted foam is usually cheaper than pyramid foam, although both reduce the reverberation equally. Why is that? Very simple: The production of convoluted foam is not as complex from a technical point of view. The running time of the machines is shorter than with pyramid foam for the same amount of m² produced. This has a considerable effect on the price.

Convoluted foam is therefore usually cheaper overall. Nevertheless, pyramid foams are often preferred. The edges of the convoluted foam do not finish flush. This can often not be achieved, due to the production process. So if you lay the foams butt to butt, you can see a small offset, as the new convoluted panel does not start where the other one ends.

This means the installation pattern is not quite clean. This is not as bad as it sounds, though it can be a thorn in the side of perfectionists. Convoluted foams are therefore often used with a few centimetres gap separating them, so that this offset is not noticeable. The lower price for what is actually the same level of damping is however quite a strong argument in favour of this great foam material.

Pyramid foam - also a classic

Alongside the convoluted foam is our pyramid foam - which we also produce internally. The pyramids are cross-cut with a special machine. It has to be set up from two sides, one after the other - the machine running time during cutting is therefore longer and the price is therefore somewhat higher. However, the pyramids stop flush at the edge so that the panels can be placed directly butt to butt and you can't see where one foam panel ends and where the next begins after laying. Just like convoluted foam, pyramid foams dampen in the medium and high frequency range – shrill tones in particular can be dampened efficiently.

You will find pyramid foam as well as our convoluted foam in many qualities and in different thicknesses. The panel thicknesses define which frequencies are absorbed. Thinner dimensions absorb more in the higher frequency range, while lower frequencies attenuate in the slightly lower frequency range. In our product descriptions you will find more detailed information and in our online guide we explain many standard problems that you can quickly solve with our range.

Should you buy convoluted foam or pyramid foam?

It is important to know what you can do with both foams and what you want to achieve. Other materials are better suited for sound insulation.Visit our "Sound insulation" section, for example, if you want to reduce external noise. If you only want to reduce the reverb within the room, then you can use both pyramid foam and convoluted foam - both will solve your problem - which look you find better or what you are willing to spend on it is your decision. Please note, however, that there are quality differences between the two types - in our shop you will find foam in many qualities and colours, so that you will certainly find what you are looking for.
